We have a problem. A big one.
Cotton farmers in India are committing suicide at an alarming rate of one every 30 minutes. There have officially been over 300,000 farmers suicides in the last 20 years - it's the largest number of suicides recorded in human history. Farmers have to bear the high costs of "modern" farming using genetically-modified seeds and synthetic farm inputs, while their yields and returns are unreliable causing them to be caught in a vicious cycle of debt where they feel their only escape is to take their own life. That's nasty. And it's happening right now, right here in India.
These numbers were too disturbing for us to ignore, so we decided to do something about it.
We looked at the current initiatives in India to address this issue and were glad to discover a solution in "organic" and "fair trade" farming practices. However, all this work was being done only at the grassroots level. There wasn't enough support for it from the end consumers - from you and me.
A lack of awareness. A lack of alternatives.
Anyone truly aware of what is going on would not continue to ignore this crisis. If you had a viable alternative, you would choose it. An alternative that doesn't ask you to change your lifestyle, but meets you where you're at and matches your fashion and design sensibilities.

Introducing No Nasties
Starting from seed up, a No Nasties garment is a labour of love - love for the planet, love for fellow beings, love for good design.
All our products are made from 100% organic cotton in a fair trade factory following vegan principles.
This helps farmers. This helps factory workers. This helps animals. This helps you and me too.
Why Organic Cotton is Better
Organic cotton is grown using natural seeds (not GMO) and using natural means of pest and weed control (no synthetic pesticides or fertilisers).
It costs the farmers less (eliminating high debt and eventually, suicides!), and it costs the planet a lot less too in water & energy savings. It maintains soil health, and eliminates toxic chemicals from entering our water streams and food systems too.
It's cheaper, it's cleaner, it's better.

What does Fair Trade mean?
Where organic farming reduces costs, "fair trade" increases their income.
Together, organic + fair trade provide a sustainable living for farmers!
"Fairtrade" (single word) is one of the largest non-profits in the world with over 1.7 million farmers in over 75 countries. It's truly a global movement for change!
Fairtrade ensures a guaranteed minimum price for products (providing a safety net!) as well as a premium for community development projects like building schools, health clinics, roads or investments in technology like drip irrigation (decided by the farmers, no one else!).
There are also strict ethical & environmental standards both at farms and at factories where Fairtrade certified products are made (like the one we make our clothes in!). No child labour, no forced labour, no dangerous factories!
No Nasties is very proud to be the first clothing brand to be Fairtrade licensed in India!

TRADE, NOT AID
What’s Vegan About Our Clothing?
While most of us associate "vegan" with food, this concept of not unnecessarily killing/hurting/abusing animals for our human consumption extends to all other aspects of our lives including our clothes too.
Vegan clothes are free from any animal products and there is no animal testing or cruelty associated with them. Just plant-based products.
So, no leather, no fur, no wool, no silk, no bone or shell buttons - just 100% cotton (that too, organic fairtrade cotton!).
Kindness for all. And why not, eh?
(NO LEATHER, FUR, WOOL OR SILK)
COCONUT SHELL BUTTONS
(NO BONES, NO SHELL)
NO TESTING ON ANIMALS
The apparel supply chain is long and complex - from farms to factories, and from fabrics to inks & dyes. So how would you know that our products are truly what we claim they are?
That's why we work *only* with companies that are certified by independent third-party auditors.
The factory where all the No Nasties clothes are made is certified organic (as per the Global Organic Textile Standard) and certified Fairtrade (as per Fairtrade International and FLO-CERT).
Also, we are (self-certified) by PETA for being vegan too based on our supply chain, raw materials & product inputs.
Organic. Fairtrade. Vegan. Certified!
