It's our birthday!

We launched No Nasties on April 16th, 2011 - 7 years ago. Wow, that went by fast!
Guess time flies when you’re making 100% organic, 100% fair trade cotton clothes.

As we reflect on the last 7 years, three words come to mind repeatedly:

1) Impact

2) Gratitude

3) Movement

And this week, we also have a new word that's taken over our thoughts: TREES! 
Why trees, what trees, how trees?! Keep reading (don't make like a tree and "leave" - haha!)

1. Impact

Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.

Our goal is to create a consumer movement for ethical fashion. For this, we work on 3 levels:

a) Helping Organic Cotton Farmers:
The goal: Increase consumption of organic fair trade cotton.
More organic fair trade cotton purchased = more farmers get paid = more farmers switch to sustainable farming.
(Impact Fact: The co-op we work with has gone from 234 farmers in 2014 to 35,852 farmers in 2014! That's huge!)

b) Connecting Consumers:
The plan: Offer lots of products; make it easy for people to choose organic & fair trade.
We started with just tees & now we are a full-fledged fashion brand with dozens of styles for women, men, kids and accessories too! 
(Impact Fact: 62 styles, 17 collections and a total of 79,345 clothes sold in 7 years.)

c) Collaborating with Brands:
The philosophy: Serve as a lighthouse by guiding "competitors" to launch their own ethical fashion brands.
(Impact Fact: We've worked with 44 companies so far and counting!

Good news - this seems to be working! So far, so good. See our impact numbers below.

Good stuff all around! We’re pleased as punch. Two thumbs up. Hurrah! 
 

But…

It’s been 7 years of running an e-commerce company and our business activities have an impact on the planet:

• Production - All goods, even sustainable goods, have an ecological footprint. 
• Packing - even though we don’t use plastics, cardboard and paper don’t exactly grow on trees...oh, wait! 
• Shipping - 1545 orders shipped to 61 different countries - imagine the frequent flier miles!

We do a lot to minimise this impact but it still isn't enough.
(What we already do: Our farms are rain-fed & there are no toxic pesticides & fertilisers used, there are no heavy metals in our azo-free dyes & plastisol-free inks, we use organic cloth bags for packaging and our paper hang-tags are made of upcycled organic cotton fabric waste; our shipping boxes are made of recycled cardboard…we do a lot, but there's still an ecological cost and we're not ok sitting idle about it!)

We’ve decided to do something about this. Something simple yet amazing.
We are going to Plant TREES! (Yes, those magical things that give out free oxygen, food & shade!)
Lots & lots & lots of them! (And you're gonna do it with us too!)

This will cost us a lot of green, yes, but we’re not "all bark & no bite" kind of people.
As small as our company is, we'll do our part. Mighty oaks from little acorns grow.

Thank you for the support from all corners of the world - literally. From Peru to Namibia, South Korea to Saudi Arabia, Guernsey to Guadeloupe, Uganda to even Vanuata. Wow!

3. Movement:  

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It's not.
